Pre & Post Facial Do’s and Don’ts

A simple guide to getting the most from your glow
Facials are more than just relaxing (although we love that part). They’re corrective, restorative, and supportive for your skin’s long-term health. What you do before and after your appointment can truly influence your results.
Here’s your easy guide to preparing your skin and protecting your glow afterward.
BEFORE YOUR FACIAL
DO:
✔ Stay hydrated
Hydrated skin responds better to treatment. Drink plenty of water the day before and the day of your appointment.
✔ Keep your routine simple
Stick to your normal, gentle routine. If you’re using sensitive-skin friendly products (like Hale & Hush), continue as directed.
✔ Let your esthetician know about changes
New medications? Recent illness? Hormone changes? Skin feeling reactive? Share it all. It helps me treat your skin safely and effectively.
✔ Come with clean skin if possible
No need to scrub, just arrive makeup-light if you can. (But don’t stress if you’re coming from work. I’ve got you.)
DON’T:
✖ Don’t use retinoids or strong exfoliants 3–5 days before
This includes prescription retinol, peels, scrubs, or aggressive exfoliating pads. Over-exfoliated skin is more prone to irritation.
✖ Don’t wax 3–5 days before
Skin needs time to recover before facial treatments.
✖ Don’t get excessive sun exposure
Sunburned or overheated skin cannot safely receive most facial treatments.
AFTER YOUR FACIAL
This is where your results are protected 🤎
DO:
✔ Change your pillowcase
2 - 3x a week
Pillowcases collect oil, sweat, saliva, etc and can transfer bacteria to your skin.
✔ Follow your esthetician’s product recommendations
After a treatment, your skin is more receptive. Gentle, barrier-supportive products will extend your results.
✔ Use sunscreen daily
Especially after exfoliating treatments. Your fresh skin deserves protection.
✔ Expect a “purge” or slight sensitivity (sometimes)
If we stimulated cellular turnover, mild breakouts or flaking can happen, but it should be temporary.
✔ Drink water and nourish your body
Healthy skin reflects internal balance. Think hydration, balanced meals, and rest.
DON’T:
✖ No makeup for 24-48 hours
Your skin is freshly exfoliated and deeply cleansed. Let it breathe for 24-48 hours.
✖ Don’t exfoliate for at least 5–7 days
Your skin just received professional exfoliation. Let it rest.
✖ Don’t pick or touch your skin
Extractions (if done) were done in a controlled, sterile environment. Picking at home can cause inflammation or scarring.
✖ Don’t use heat treatments for 24–48 hours
Avoid saunas, hot yoga, long hot showers, or intense workouts immediately after your facial.
✖ Don’t introduce new products right away
Now is not the time to experiment. Keep it calm and consistent.
A Gentle Reminder
Facials are a partnership. What we do in the treatment room matters, but what you do at home matters just as much.
Healthy skin isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being consistent.
If you ever feel unsure about what your skin needs before or after an appointment, just ask. I’m here to guide you 🤎
